Choose life. Choose a lake. Choose a swim. Choose a bait. Choose a rig. Choose sleepless nights under the stars. Choose the nocturnal music of branches creaking in the wind, leaves whispering, and the eerie night-calls of owls and wildfowl. Choose bright moons shattered in the rippling surface of lakes, and purple skies at sunset perfectly mirrored. Choose silent mist-shrouded pools at dawn. Choose visions of white-flowering waterlilies turning green-gold in the half-light. Choose the flashing bronze flanks of carp, twisting below the surface, on the edge of visibility. Choose a heightened heart-rate. Choose an emotional rollercoaster. Choose the psychological assault-course of planning, watching, locating, preparing, casting and waiting. Choose the endless hours of strung-out anticipation. Choose the rush of striking, hooking, fighting, and landing (or losing) the fish. Choose to walk the tightrope between desperate failure and the adrenaline-inducing, life-enhancing triumphant high of success. Choose life. Choose obsession. Choose Carp Fishing.

Questions and Answers with Des Taylor

An interview with Des Taylor, sponsored angler.

Before I begin this interview I would like to say a big thank you to Des for finding the time to do this interview, it really is appreciated, right then let’s begin…

So then Des, when did it all begin?  Where was the first place that you wet a line?
When did you begin to target big carp?

I began to target big carp in wales at a lake called Llandridod Wells in 1976 and 1977 had my first 20 at 20.14 a great fish at the time on liver and trout pellet paste.

Carp fishing goes from strength to strength each year. Like myself, you target big carp, did you just follow the trend?

No i did not follow trean i was fishing for carp before the circus took over. I read dick walker books like no need to lie and drop me a line and this inspired me to carp fish.

Can you tell me, and everyone reading this interview, more about your personal angling?

I started fishing when i was 11 on the local canal and the first fish i caught was a stone loach i caught my first carp from a pool in halesowen called leesows about three pounds a little common. since those days i have branched out to all kinds of fishing and taken big fish of most species around the world my biggest carp being 75.14 from rainbow. I have been writing for 25 years a weekly column in angling times and as well as angling love just being out there in the countryside. My biggest river fish is a 525 sturgeon, biggest fish is 1800 great white shark.

Do you have a memorable capture?

Memoral catch would be carp wise my first 30 from shropshire  20 years ago now at 38lb that year i also caught a 30lb cat and a 30lb pike from England.

What’s the best piece of advice you could give to anybody reading this regards targeting big carp?

Advice dont take it to the point you live like a tramp, spoil your marriage and lose your job its just fishing and although it is important there are far more important things to look after in your life.I have been fishing since i was 11 and at 64 still fish 4 days a week but i never take myself too seriously
